Opponent process additivity. II. Yellow/blue equilibria and nonlinear models.

چکیده
A yellow/blue equilibrium Iight is one which appears neither yellowish nor bluish (i.e. uniquely red, uniquely green, or achromatic). The spectral locus of the monochromatic greenish equilibrium (around 500 nm) shows little, if any, variation over a luminance range of .! log,, units. Reddish equilibria are extraspectral. involving mixtures of short-and long-wave light. Their wavelength composition is noninvariant with luminance: a reddish equilibrium light turns bluish-red if luminance is increased with wavelength composition constant. The additive mixture of the reddish and greenish equilibria is again a yellow, blue equilibrium light. We conclude that yellow/blue equilibrium can be described as the zeroing of a nonlinear functional. which is, however, approximately linear in the short-wavelength (" blue ") and middle-wavelength (" green ") cone responsesand nonlinear only in the long-wavelength (" red ") cone response. The " red " cones contribute to yellowness but via a compressive function of luminance. This effect works against the direction of the Bezold-Briicke hue shift. The Jameson-Hurvich yellowiblue chromatic-response function is only approximately correct; the relative values of yellow/blue chromatic response for an equal energy spectrum must vary somewhat with the energy level.

Opponent-process additivity--I: red-green equilibria.
A red/green equilibrium light is one which appears neither reddish nor greenish (i.e. either uniquely yellow, uniquely blue, or achromatic). A subset of spectral and nonspectral red/green equilibria was determined for several luminance levels, in order to test whether the set of all such equilibria is closed under linear color-mixture operations. The spectral loci ofequilibrium yellow and blue ...
متن کاملA ratio principle for a red/green and a yellow/blue channel?
There is strong empirical evidence that, under adaptation to another achromatic color stimulus, the lightness of an achromatic color stimulus depends on the ratio of the luminances of the two stimuli. In the present study, the suitability of this ratio principle is tested for two chromatic postreceptoral opponent channels. A Hering red/green channel and a non-Hering yellow/blue channel are spec...
متن کاملRelating cone signals to color appearance: Failure of monotonicity in yellow0blue
Observers performed red–green and yellow–blue hue cancellation tasks for a 0.8-deg circular test field on a dark surround, by manipulating the excitation level of one cone class while the other two classes were held constant. The results of the red–green judgments conformed to classical opponent color theory in that both Land S-cone excitation levels were antagonistic to M-cone signals. The yel...
متن کاملThe Evaluation of Yellow vs. Blue Color Contrast Sensitivity pre and Post LASIK
Introduction: contrast sensitivity is one of the most important psychophysical tests that may be used for the evaluation of refractive state of eye and retinal image quality. Yellow vs. blue color contrast sensitivity may be more suitable in this regard. Materials and Methods: thirty myopic eyes were considered in this study. Yellow vs. blue color contrast sensitivity was evaluated under the sa...
متن کاملOpponent Color Space Motivated by Retinal Processing
We introduce a new opponent color space, which aims to mimic the color processing in the primate retina. Recent data from physiology and morphology are used to determine the model and its parameters. The input signal in LMS representation is first nonlinearly transformed by a response saturation stage. Then a linear, spatially extended transformation computes the opponent representation. In con...
